CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Looking chic in a floor-length sequined sheath dress, Dame Gabor was in the middle of a set when Alias walked into The Fairy Kingdom lounge. She was filling in on vocals for the usual singer who’d had taken the night off, and she and her accompanist were performing pop songs from the seventies and eighties.

He plopped down to relax with a glass of prosecco in a comfortable chair in the atrium, and he was so into the music that he didn’t hear the group of thirteen walk in and take over the long table in the front window. She elbowed him.

“Those are the nutjobs I was telling you about.” Alias nodded to acknowledge that he’d seen them, but he leaned back and closed his eyes as she took to the microphone. “This next medley is from one of my favorite bands, Paul McCartney and Wings. Maybe you remember them.” She lifted her microphone off the stand and worked the room during the set.

The Friends of the Fairies were loud, and as they nibbled from the pupu platters and sipped their tea, Dame Gabor got close enough to see them airdropping photos to each other. She overheard how ecstatic they were to meet a real live fairy and how they had enough stories to keep their blogs and social media pages busy for a lifetime. When she’d heard enough, she wound her way back to the piano singing her own rendition of Bad Company.

During the next break she sat next to Alias. “I hate to disturb you, Your H, but I overheard a couple of those Friends of the Fairies talking about their travel plans. It seems we’re finally going to be rid of them. They’re all leaving tomorrow.”

He answered without opening his eyes. “Good riddance, is all I can say.”

“Incidentally, they must love our tea, so at least they have some good taste. They’ve been drinking so much, the new girl got tired of running back and forth with refills, and she brought out a samovar for the table. A gorgeous one from your palace, if I recall correctly. Austro-Hungarian Empire antique silver? Ring a bell?”

“Of course I know it. But the tea in those was meant for the fairies, and she shouldn’t have served it to them, because I have no idea how humans will react to it.” He pointed to their table, and when nobody was looking he snapped his fingers, and the samovar disappeared. “They seem a little drunk to me, but nothing more than that.”

She heard the intro to her next song. “Listen. We’ll talk in a bit. My gig is starting up again.”

When Bruce and his wife got to the front of the teahouse, he peered through the window. “Look, those are the ones who chained me in the motel room!” he shouted, and he pulled his wife over. “I recognize all of them!” He burst through the door and stormed to their table. “This is my wife, and I demand that you tell her that you kidnapped me! She doesn’t believe me.
